How to scale a perfume formula to a bigger batch
A formula is a set of ratios, and scaling it is one multiplication: every line times the same factor. Everything that goes wrong when a trial does not smell like the batch comes from something that was not actually a ratio. Here are the four things that are not.
Drops are not a unit
A drop of a thick absolute and a drop of a thin aldehyde are different masses, and the same pipette gives a different drop on a warm day. A formula written in drops cannot be scaled, only re-guessed. Convert it once to mass, weigh the trial, and from then on the ratios are real. If all you have is a drop formula, weigh ten drops of each material once and write down what they weighed; that table turns the drops into grams.
A dilution carries its solvent with it
If a line was weighed from a ten percent stock, scaling the line scales the solvent too. Ten times more of the dilution is ten times more alcohol arriving through the back door, and the finished strength drifts. Either scale the aromatic mass and re-add solvent to the target strength, or keep every line at the dilution it was trialled at and accept that the solvent is part of the recipe. What you cannot do is switch a line from a dilution to neat while scaling and expect the same smell. The dilution math covers this in numbers.
The scale has a floor
A line that is a hundredth of a percent of a ten gram trial is a milligram, which most bench scales cannot weigh honestly. Scaling up fixes this, and it is the best reason to make a bigger batch: the trace lines become weighable. Scaling down does the opposite, so a formula that was tuned at a hundred grams and is remade at five grams has its trace lines rounded to nothing. If a small batch is what you need, make a dilution of the trace material first and weigh that.
Weigh what you actually put in
A batch record is the weights that went into the beaker, not the weights the formula asked for. Over-shoot a line by a tenth of a gram and the honest fix is to scale the rest of the batch to the line you already poured, not to pretend. Write the real figures down; the next batch is compared with those, and a formula that only exists as targets cannot explain why two batches differ.
