How to make a perfume smell more natural, or less synthetic
A perfume smells synthetic when a few clean molecules do all the work at full dose and nothing rough sits beside them. Add naturals as texture rather than as the idea, dose the synthetics lower than the supplier suggests, and match the strip life of the two so the naturals do not leave first.
Why does my perfume smell synthetic?
Usually for one of three reasons, and rarely because of which bottles you bought.
- Too clean. A single aroma molecule is one note. A natural is hundreds, with an earthy, waxy or slightly off edge somewhere in the mix. Build a heart from Hedione, Linalool and a white musk and it will be smooth, radiant and featureless, the smell of a hotel lobby rather than of a flower.
- Too loud. Supplier dose ranges are written for functional perfumery and for people who know the material. Most synthetic notes read as synthetic simply because they are dosed where they can be heard as themselves. Halve the dose and the same molecule becomes an effect instead of a note.
- Too tidy in time. The synthetics all leave the strip in an orderly line and nothing overlaps. Naturals are messy in time, which is what a living smell is.
How do I use naturals as texture?
Do not try to build the perfume out of naturals; use them to roughen a structure the synthetics already hold. The catalog's own note on Jasmine Grandiflorum Absolute is the rule in one line: even 1% naturalizes any floral heart. The absolute brings indolic depth, a fruity banana-like ester and a tea-like elegance that no set of single molecules has in the same balance, and at 1% of the concentrate it does that without becoming the note. The same is true of Vetiver Essential Oil under a synthetic wood, or Patchouli Essential Oil under an amber: a few percent, and the synthetic frame stops being visible.
The other texture is a trace of dirt. Indole is mothballs neat and luminous in dilution; at parts per thousand it gives a white floral its living breath. Dose it from a 1% dilution and stop when the perfume smells alive, not when you can smell the indole.
Should I dose the synthetics lower?
Yes, and the working rule is to dose each synthetic below the point where you could name it. A material a listener can point to is a material doing a note's job; a material they cannot point to but would miss is doing an effect's job, and effects are what naturals sound like. Bring each synthetic down until it disappears into the whole, then let the naturals carry the character on top of that floor. This is also where most of the cost saving in a formula lives.
What is the strip-life mismatch?
The mistake that makes a perfume smell natural for twenty minutes and synthetic for the rest of the day. Naturals are mostly fast: a citrus oil is gone from a strip in hours, a floral absolute in a day. Many synthetics are slow: Iso E Super, the woody-ambers and every musk stay for days. If all your naturals sit in the top and all your synthetics sit in the base, the perfume sheds its naturalness on schedule and exposes the frame underneath.
The fix is to place naturals across the whole clock, not just at the opening: vetiver, patchouli or a sandalwood oil in the base beside the synthetic woods, a resin or a balsam under the musk, an absolute in the heart. Then check the pairing on a dated strip through the day and the next morning. The question at each hour is not "does it still smell" but "does it still smell like something that grew".
A worked example: a white floral heart that reads as a flower
Per 100 g of concentrate, the synthetic frame first: Hedione 20 g, Linalool 5 g, Galaxolide 50% 10 g (5 g of musk), Iso E Super 6 g. On its own this is clean, bright and anonymous. Now the texture: Jasmine Grandiflorum Absolute 1 g, Indole 0.5 g weighed from a 1% dilution (0.005 g neat), and Vetiver Essential Oil 2 g under the Iso E Super so the base has something that lasts as long as the synthetic wood but is not it. Bottled at 20%, the jasmine absolute lands at 0.2% of the finished product, a third of its IFRA 51st Amendment Category 4 cap of 0.6%, so the naturalising dose is also a legal one.
