Too many materials: how to fix a muddy perfume

A perfume smells muddy when several materials are doing the same job and none of them is dosed high enough to be heard. The fix is to cut, not to rebalance: find every job that two or more lines share, keep the one that does it best, and remove the others entirely.

Mud is the beginner's most reliable fault because it is the natural result of caution. Three woods to be sure the wood reads, two musks to be safe, a little of everything the reference formula had. Each line makes sense. Together they average into a smell with no edges, and no amount of dose adjustment gets the edges back, because the problem is the count.

How do I know the formula is muddy and not just soft?

Ask a simple question of each line: if I removed it, what would change? If the honest answer for any line is "not much", the formula is muddy, and that line is a candidate. A soft formula is a decision; every line in it has a job and the effect is quiet on purpose. A muddy one has lines whose job is being done by a neighbour.

The second sign is on the strip. A muddy formula reads the same at ten minutes, two hours and eight hours, not because nothing evaporates but because there are so many overlapping materials at every stage that whatever leaves is replaced by something similar. The perfume has no events.

How do I cut without losing the idea?

  1. Name the idea in a few words. "Dry vetiver with rose" is an idea. "Woody floral" is a category. If you cannot name it, the cut has no criterion.
  2. List each line's job in words. Carries the idea, shades it, bridges the tops to the base, anchors it at eight hours. Two lines with the same job are a double.
  3. Audition the doubles separately. Make the formula once with each candidate alone at a committed dose, and pick the one that says it best. Cut the others, not to a smaller dose, out.
  4. Remove the hedges. Any line whose removal changes nothing on the strip goes. If it turns out to matter, the strip will say so and it can return, at a dose that can be heard.
  5. Re-dose what is left. With fewer lines, each survivor usually needs a higher share than it had. This is where the formula finds its edges again.

A worked example

A rose and wood formula that came in at fourteen lines, and the wood section alone reads: Cedarwood Essential Oil 8, Vetiver Essential Oil 6, Sandalwood (F-TEC) 6, Iso E Super 15, Patchouli Essential Oil 4, in parts. Five materials, one job: wood under a rose. None is dosed high enough to have a character, and the wood reads as a beige average.

The idea was named as "dry vetiver with rose", so the criterion is clear. Vetiver carries the idea. Iso E Super stays as the transparent lift that vetiver alone does not give; that is a different job. Cedar, sandalwood and patchouli are cut. Vetiver goes from 6 parts to 14, so it has the conviction the three cut lines were sharing between them. One trial, three readings: the wood now has a name, the rose is heard against it, and the eight-hour strip is a dry vetiver rather than a blur.

The rose section gets the same treatment: Geraniol at a committed dose replaces the three rose materials that were each too shy to read.

How few lines is too few?

There is no floor. A formula is finished when removing any line changes the idea and adding any line does not improve it, and that number is whatever it is. Naturals are already mixtures of many molecules, so a formula of six lines can have the complexity of sixty; complexity comes from the materials, not the count. If a cut formula feels thin rather than clear, the missing thing is usually a bridge between the fast and the slow lines, one line with a middle strip life, not the doubles you removed.
