What does Velvetone smell like?
Bedoukian's copy reads powdery, woody, wonderful orris-violet, and positions it as more floral than gamma-methyl ionone, with a diffusive orris character and less wood. TGSC files the odour type as powdery, strength medium, substantivity greater than 48 hours at full strength. In a formula it is the orris that does not need orris: it lays a dry violet-powder veil over a woody or ambery base, extends a real iris butter, and softens the edge of an aldehydic or rosy top. Being less woody than the methyl ionones, it also stays out of the way of sandalwood and cedar materials sharing the same base.
