What does Pelargene smell like?
Givaudan's wording is a powerful geranium character, reminiscent of crushed leaves, adding substantivity and body particularly to floral fragrances and especially to rose and geranium. It is a mixture of three phenyl pyrans rather than one molecule. What it does in a formula is structural rather than decorative: it holds a rose or geranium accord open with a bruised green leaf that keeps the flower from going syrupy, and it is genuinely tenacious for a green material, several weeks on the blotter, so it also functions as body under the whole floral heart. Powerful enough that Givaudan caps it at 2 percent, and it blooms strongly in soap and alkaline bases.
