What does l-Limonene smell like?
Citrus, orange, minty and woody: the laevo enantiomer reads pine-needle and turpentine rather than the sweet orange peel of its dextro twin, with a herbal, faintly peppery terpene edge. It occurs in pine needle and fir cone oils, turpentine, star anise, peppermint and spearmint. Takasago sells it to give lift and freshness to citrus fragrances, where it carries bergamot, orange, lemon, mandarin and grapefruit; TGSC rates the odour medium with 4 hours substantivity at 100%. Stable in most bases but not in alkaline bleach, and like all limonene it oxidises, so it is bought fresh and stored cold.
