What does Sclarene 80%/DPG smell like?
Givaudan's description is a strong dry woody note with camphor and warm metallic undertones, classed olfactively as woody, dry and ambery. It is 4,5-decamethyleneoxazole, and it is sold only as an 80 percent solution in dipropylene glycol, so the bottle on the bench is already a dilution and the dosing has to account for it. Its real function is as a musk booster and fixative: it has good substantivity on both damp and dry substrate and works synergistically with musky and ambery materials, Ambrofix in particular, lifting them without adding a sweet amber of its own. Normally kept below 1 percent, though it can be pushed higher to build a distinctive dry woody signature. Several days on the blotter and excellent bloom in soap.
