Perfumers who work with it single it out as the earthier reading of iris rather than the soft powdery one, one describing it as smelling exactly like oil paint. That is the useful distinction: this is the rhizome and the damp root, the linseed and cellar side of orris, not the violet-ionone top that most iris accords are built from.
