Perfumer's Apprentice lists it under the earthy family with the odour description floral, orris, earthy, supplied as a yellow liquid. Perfumers who work with it single it out as the earthier reading of iris rather than the soft powdery one, one describing it as smelling exactly like oil paint. That is the useful distinction: this is the rhizome and the damp root, the linseed and cellar side of orris, not the violet-ionone top that most iris accords are built from. Used as a body base it gives an iris formula weight and a mineral floor underneath whatever ionones and orris naturals sit above it.
