How to make a perfume last longer
A perfume lasts as long as its slowest audible materials, at the dose and concentration they are worn at. To make it last longer, raise the share of long strip-life materials, wear it at a higher concentration, or both; a fixative added to a formula that has no base will not rescue it.
"Lasts longer" is the most-asked question in hobby perfumery and the most misunderstood, because the answer is bought as a bottle called fixative when it is really a property of the whole formula.
What decides how long a perfume lasts?
- Strip life. Every material leaves skin at its own rate. Lemon oil is readable on a blotter for a few hours; a good musk for weeks. A formula's longevity is set by how much of it is made of slow materials, weighted by how loudly they read.
- Base share. The share of the concentrate that is base material. A formula that is 70% top notes is a cologne however it is labelled; it will be gone in an hour or two whatever the base is.
- Concentration. The same concentrate at 30% in alcohol lasts longer than at 10%, because more of every slow material was applied. An eau de parfum is conventionally around 15 to 20% concentrate; an extrait sits higher.
- Loudness of the base. A base that is present but faint does not count as lasting. What matters is whether it is still audible, and a strong-smelling base material at a small dose can outlast a quiet one at a large dose.
Is a fixative the answer?
Only when the formula already has a base and the base leaves too early. A fixative is a slow material that also slows its neighbours a little by holding them in the film on skin; benzyl salicylate, the big musks and some resins do this. It cannot make a top note last eight hours, and it cannot substitute for a base that has no idea in it. Add a fixative to an all-citrus formula and you get a citrus that vanishes, followed by a faint musk that was never part of the idea.
The better question is: what is the perfume supposed to smell like at hour eight? Answer that with a material you would be happy to wear alone, dose it as a real line, and the longevity follows.
What is the habituation trap?
The nose adapts. Wear a perfume for four hours and you stop smelling it long before other people do; the base is still there, you have simply habituated to it. Perfumers who test on their own skin systematically under-estimate how long their formulas last, and respond by adding more base, which makes the formula heavier without making it last longer for anyone else.
The fix is a second nose and a strip. Ask someone else at hour four and hour eight. Read the blotter alongside; it has no nose to adapt. A worked example
A fresh formula that "does not last": Lemon Essential Oil 40, Linalool 20, Hedione 25, Galaxolide 15, in parts, worn at 12% in alcohol.
The diagnosis is arithmetic before it is olfactory: 60% of the concentrate is top notes with a strip life of hours, Hedione is a heart material, and the only base is a single quiet musk at 15%. Worn at 12% it is a cologne, and PerfuMate's model puts an all-citrus cologne at that concentration at a little over two hours before it falls below notice.
One change per trial, in this order. First, raise the base share: Vetiver Essential Oil at 12 parts, a slow material that is loud enough to be heard beside the lemon, and it gives the eight-hour strip an idea rather than a residue. Second, a fixative that also carries the citrus a little longer: Benzyl Salicylate at 10 parts, quiet and very slow. Third, the concentration: the same concentrate at 18% instead of 12%. Each trial gets its three readings, and the eight-hour one is the one that matters here. By the third trial the lemon is still a lemon at the opening and there is a perfume at hour eight, which is what "lasts longer" means.
Does more concentrate always mean longer?
Yes for longevity, and there is a trade: above a certain concentration the heavy materials damp the light ones and the opening goes dull, so an extrait of the same formula can last longer and project less. Longevity and projection pull in different directions past the sweet spot, which is why the two are separate questions and projection has a page of its own.
