What does 3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione smell like?
Bedoukian's own FL-841 spec sheet gives a sweet hay character reminiscent of green and black tea, with cream notes appearing at lower levels and dry green notes that carry dried herbs. Perfumer & Flavorist list BRI 841 in the 2026 fragrance range as anisic, spicy, herbal, green and lactonic, and TGSC records fruity, straw, caramel and burnt at 10% in dipropylene glycol. It is among the most powerful odorants known, an aroma determinant of tea, apricot and oxidised wine detectable at parts per trillion, with the receptor OR1A1 highly selective for it. In a formula a trace builds hay, tea and tobacco character or lends anisic-lactonic warmth to a gourmand; an overdose turns burnt and prune-like and will swallow everything around it, so weigh it only from a very dilute solution.

Every
regulatory join - IFRA, GHS, allergens - is by CAS number, and a material can
supply one through its constituents as well as its own row, so of the
540 materials carrying no CAS number the 248 without a
constituent table are the ones that return "nothing known" rather than
"nothing applies". The blotter hours are sourced rather than measured by us, and the app
labels every one of them an estimate. There is no physical chemistry on a row:
no molecular weight, no vapour pressure, no boiling point.
